I want to ask you a question. How the heck did you get all your details on your shoots ? I am about to secure my first ever engagement session, And I don't know if I should bring my own props or should that be the responsibility of the couple? The couple told me that they would bring some stuff, but I'm not sure if that would be enough for the session.I'm thinking to spend or buy maybe one or two but not sure if that is practical.
Excited and confuse
Before I answer your question , let me tell you that I'm so in love with details and elements that circle around this tiny little things, and how they can magically transform the whole album into a life story. Details whether that's an Engagement or Wedding play a huge role! why would we want pictures of the shoes or flowers or bottles?” Honestly, it’s very simple: The details fade. The jewelry will break or get lost. The cake will get eaten until the very last bite leftover from the freezer at that one year anniversary. The dress will get packed or given away or sold ( for some)The details make each Wedding or Engagement session different. Unique to each couple! that also manifest not only after the shoot or once the final process of the photos are out, but also during the shoot for details represents each couples personalities. This is really important to capture and preserve.
Now that's on the table let's talk about how I come up with details on engagement session, As I do consultation and know the couple by heart, we talk about the props, and I highly encourage them to bring some, that would represent their personalities and love to each other, I try to give them ideas like, balloon, books, chocolates, and let them know that this is their day,I encourage them to be creative if they want to put a couch in an open field, or wear vintage outfits! rock on! all this will manifest on what image we all both want to have. Now If I feel that the couple might lack on that area( Details) that's when I comes in, What I do is come up with some ideas, and I always tell them the details so we are all on the same page just to compliment the things they already have.Remember you are not just photographer that shoots, but also a photographer that helps. DO I SPEND FOR IT? YES I DO but not a whole bunch! this depends on you and the couple, you can ask additional charge as long as both party would agree, On my Part I think of it as a gift that I send to the couple after the session.
In addition I enjoy making personalized(DIY)details for the couple, not only I get to choose materials but also less expensive to produce.
1.Know their personalities
2.Ask questions ( how they met, favorites etc.)
3.What kind of props they could bring.
I hope this offers a little more insight into how I work, but--more so--what you can do to bring out the true spirit of your subjects behind the camera.
